Scientific work at Mykolaiv Zoo

As a scientific activity, the employees of Mykolaiv Zoo cooperate with other zoos and universities and conduct joint research. The results of scientific research are published by the zoo. The scientific works of our employees are published in the collections of other zoos of Ukraine and zoos of other countries.

Mykolaiv Zoo cooperates with the EAZA Biobank, provides samples of hair, blood, and feathers of animals for further genetic research.

Publication of Mykolaiv Zoo:

  • At the end of 2007, the second edition (amended and revised) of the book “Diets of animals of Mykolaiv Zoo” was released;
  • In August 2008, the “Collection of Regulatory Documents of Mykolaiv Zoo” was published;
  • In 2009, a collection of methodical developments “On the Paths of Mowgli. Animals heal.” was published:

  • Since 2015, Mykolaiv Zoo began to issue annual reports of the zoo in printed form. The colorful illustrated brochures present an analysis of the movement of zoo animals, analysis of feeding, preservation of young animals, etc.;
  • In 2017, the third edition of the book “Diets of animals of Mykolaiv Zoo” was released;
  • In March 2018, the fourth collection of scientific articles by the employees of Mykolaiv Zoo, as well as our colleagues from the zoos of Ukraine, was published. This collection contains 36 articles from 7 zoos.

During the year, information about all important events in the zoo’s activities was posted on the official website of Mykolaiv Zoo, on both “Mykolaiv Zoo” pages on Facebook and Instagram. For this purpose, the specialists of the department publish 137 articles of an advertising and educational nature and take more than 1,000 photographs per year. The “Zoo News” stand which is regularly updated by employees also reports on the news of the zoo and on the actions held.

  • On September 7, 2002, the international conference “Only by our joint efforts will we save the world of wild animals” was held. 29 zoos from 9 countries and more than 60 people took part in the conference;
  • In 2004, Volodymyr Topchy participated in the conference of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums;
  • On September 15-16, 2007, the first International conference of the young naturalists movement was held, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the group of young biologists of Mykolaiv Zoo;
  • From May 31 to June 3, 2011, the XVII International Conference of the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums was held, timed to the 110th anniversary of Mykolaiv Zoo. 133 specialists from 19 countries took part in the conference.

  • On October 22-23, 2011, the 1st All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference and Exhibition-Seminar “Problems of Terrarium” was held in the city of Mykolaiv. At the conference, it was decided to create the All-Ukrainian Association of Terrarium Animal Lovers;
  • On November 16, 2017, the annual reporting conference of the Ukrainian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (UAZA) was held in Mykolaiv Zoo. 25 representatives from 12 zoos, aquariums, and terrariums of Ukraine took part in the conference. The main theme of the UAZA-2017 annual conference is “Improving the conditions for keeping animals and creating new modern zoo exhibits.” Much attention was also paid to the consideration and discussion of draft laws on the preservation of the natural fund of Ukraine;
  • From November 28 to 29, 2018, a scientific and practical conference of representatives of the Ukrainian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (UAZA) was held in Mykolaiv Zoo, dedicated to the issues of feeding wild animals in the zoo, food preparation and safety techniques during feeding. 26 animal feeding specialists who came from zoos of Ukraine took part in the conference;
  • On September 15, 2021, Mykolaiv Zoo hosted the grand opening of the “Zoo in Today’s Realities” conference dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Mykolaiv Zoo. 27 representatives of 15 zoos of Ukraine came to us. The purpose of the conference was to exchange experience on issues related to the operation of a modern zoo in today’s conditions. Also, one of the main issues of the conference was the creation of a new community that unites zoos and other institutions that keep animals – the Association of Zoos of Ukraine (AZU).

  • On October 6, 2006, two books were published. The first is a collection that includes the biographical article “My Leontovych” (author Volodymyr Topchy). The second book is the third edition of Mykolaiv Zoo guidebook “Around the World in Half a Day” (author Volodymyr Topchy). It introduces in detail the history of Mykolaiv Zoo and its collection;
  • In September 2009, a new book about Mykolaiv Zoo “We are of the same blood with you. Photo album.” was published. The pictures show only the animals of Mykolaiv Zoo:
  • December 12, 2019 in the Central Library named after M. Kropyvnytsky, the presentation of the new collectible photobook “Mykolaiv Zoo in Photos and Documents” (author VolodymyrTopchy) took place;
