National Reptile Awareness Day in the USA

National Reptile Awareness Day is held in the USA on October 21. The holiday was founded by a group of enthusiasts who sought to change society’s attitude towards reptiles for the better. Over time, RAD became popular with American herpetologists. They see it as a chance to tell about their admiration to those who are not yet familiar with these amazing creatures, to remind them of the threat posed to reptiles by the destruction of the environment where they live.

Many zoos use Reptile Awareness Day to raise awareness among visitors, such as this is a good opportunity to help people learn how to protect reptiles.

REPTILES magazine offers several promotions that should be held on Reptile Awareness Day:

  • make a donation to one of the many reptile conservation programs;
  • send letters to legislators and officials at the local or national level with proposals for changes in legislation to protect these animals and the rights of their owners;
  • bring an interesting reptile to the school (of course, by prior agreement) to show and tell the students about it;
  • spend Reptile Awareness Day at the local zoo and visit the reptile exhibition there;
  • make an appointment at a veterinary clinic to check the condition of your pet reptile.

These are just a few things that should be done to help society learn more about these unique and amazing creatures. Many reptiles are endangered. Society needs days like this so that people know more about reptiles and that these animals continue to exist alongside humans in the future.

As already reported, rare turtles were born at the San Diego Zoo.
