President of AZU Volodymyr Topchii appreciated EAZA and the international zoo community for their support
Russian invasion has put zoos in Ukraine on the brink of survival. Despite the large-scale destruction, missile strikes and energy crisis, zoos are still trying to survive. This would not have been possible without the selfless work of zoo staff and the support of the international zoo community.
Primarily, the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA).
Our European colleagues already provided the zoos that are members of the Association of Zoos of Ukraine (AZU) with significant financial assistance.
In addition, direct assistance was provided by Prague Zoo and twice provided by the Berlin Zoo.
Funds from European colleagues helped maintain Ukrainian zoos with the survival minimum and create some food storage. However, the destruction of critical infrastructure by missile strikes and the onset of cold weather give rise to new challenges. In conditions of constant blackouts, zoos are in dire need of generators and fuel for their survival.
I would like to inform our supporters that in addition to AZU members, zoos that are not its members also received the support. Among them are the Safari Zoo (town of Berdyansk) the Safari Park on the Arabatskaya Strelka Peninsula (located in the temporarily occupied area), the XII Months Zoo, which was damaged at the beginning of the war, Mena Zoo (town of Mena), private Zoo Golden Pheasant, Biopark (Odessa), scientific complex Aquarium (Dnipro National University).
The Association of Zoos of Ukraine expresses sincere gratitude to all foreign supporters for their efforts aimed at supporting zoos in this difficult time.
Respectfully,
Volodymyr Topchii, President of AZU
