Cherkasy city zoological park “Roshen” was organized in 1979 on the basis of the zoo corner of the station of young naturalists. At the time of the opening of the zoo, the collection included 86 species of animals. By 2007, the so-called “zoo of interests” was formed. Today, we have come to understand the zoo based on the quality of its exposition, the results of animal reproduction, its participation in scientific research, nature conservation and educational programs.

Zoos, like people, should be different. Similar, but different. They should differ not only in their collection of animals, but also in their approaches to display and solutions for enriching the environment for animals kept.

In 2009, the concept of the zoo’s development for the near and future perspectives was created. This concept was based on the long-term practice of zoos in keeping wild animals; views of employees on the formation and development of the animal collection; economic prospects of the institution’s development.

To ensure the stable operation of the zoo as a nature conservation, research, and educational institution, the following priorities were defined:

• expansion of the zoo territory;

• development of animal exposition and creation of optimal conditions for keeping and exhibiting them throughout the year;

• introduction of modern technical systems for providing heat, water and electricity;

• creation of comfortable conditions for visitors throughout the year;

• participation in scientific projects on animal biology research in artificially created conditions;

• popularization of the zoo as a unique tourist, educational, scientific and cultural object of Cherkasy region.

Since 2016, thanks to the sponsoring support of the “Roshen” corporation, a large-scale reconstruction of exhibits and infrastructure has begun in the zoo. Two new complexes for predatory animals “Land of Bears and Wolves” and for ungulates “Deer and Bison” have become the hallmark of the zoo. In 2021, the reconstruction of the entrance area of the zoo and the lake for waterfowl was completed.

The territory of the zoo was decorated with a picturesque stream, which connected the reservoirs in the “Land of Bears and Wolves” exhibit with the lake.

In the center of the city there is a branch of the Cherkasy Zoo: Pavilion-greenhouse “Angkor Wat”. In the pavilion there is an exposition of exotic plants, reptiles, invertebrates and fish. “Angkor Wat” is located on the territory of the Children’s Park, at the address: Cherkasy, st. Khreshchatyk, 168.

The area of ​​the zoo is 9.21 hectares. Attendance is 175,000 people per year. Cherkasy City Zoological Park “Roshen” is a member of the Association of Zoos of Ukraine.

The zoo specializes in keeping and breeding animals of the terrarium group, animals of the fauna of Ukraine.

Today, the zoo’s collection includes more than 200 species of animals from different parts of our planet.
